QSonica

Q800R2 Sonicator

Challenge

The Sonicator, a device for shearing DNA, needed a redesign to address issues related to user experience and the annoying high-frequency noise it would emit in quiet labs.

Process

As a very expensive piece of lab equipment, the user expected the Sonicator to be easy to use, safe and quiet. Our engineers tested the existing unit for noise and vibration levels to address those issues, while our designers came up with different forms and open/close options to create a better user experience.

Outcome

Forge engineers reduced the high-frequency noise and vibration by redesigning mechanisms within the unit and using our acoustics expertise to select the right sound damping and absorption materials. Users no longer have to stand on a chair and reach down into the unit from above, and the product has an overall better aesthetic.
